Reports of executions in Mali

Tuareg are the target of violence

In the military success stories in the fight against Islamists in Mali mingle serious allegations against the Malian army. Human rights activists and locals blame the armed forces to have executed Arabs and Tuaregs. Ethnic minorities are afraid. Calls for an investigation into the incidents are getting louder.

Oumou Sall Seck is mayor of Goundam, near Timbuktu. She is glad that the French troops, together with the Malian army now want to recapture the legendary city of the 333 saints of the Islamists. But Sall Seck is very afraid. Not only against the jihadists, but also against their own countrymen.

Fear of a civil war

Oumou Sall Seck is a resolute woman - but she's afraid of a civil war, and even ethnic cleansing. And their fear is fueled by reports that human rights groups now go to the public.
"We have collected statements from witnesses who report about 30 executions," says Florent Geel, spokesman for the International Federation for Human Rights, FIDH, in Bamako. The FIDH checked these statements and amassed more details - and can now prove so Geel, "that have around Sévaré actually occurred such executions that the perpetrators belong to the Malian troops -., And that above all ethnic groups such as the Tuareg become the target is. "

In war, truth is the first casualty

"The Tuareg are our friends"

In Mali, it seems, is confirmed at present the old, bitter wisdom that in war, truth is the first casualty. Alarmed showed anyhow French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on French television: "We have to be extremely vigilant - and France expects that the Malian army to fulfill its responsibility to prevent any violation of human rights is at stake is not less than. "your honor, Le Drian."Apart from those who fight with the Islamists the Malian government, the Tuareg are our friends, you are Malians like everyone else -. And we have to respect them.

It is a deep crack through Mali

It's about our defense and security."

"We need peace!"

But, Sall Seck, one must think long term anyway: "We need decentralization, we need a political dialogue, we need reconciliation!" The Malians have to get together with each other, says the mayor. "It's very difficult, but it's not impossible."
